Canelo Alvarez has never shied away from a challenge. The multi-weight world champion has fought the best fighters at different weight categories. However, he has embarked on a fresh challenge outside the ring. So how will it affect his boxing career?
The Mexican superstar revealed he would be a promoter after his release from Golden Boy Promotions. Along with his coach Eddie Reynoso, he plans to promote himself and work with several other promoters, to put on memorable events.
On February 9, Alvarez got his promotional license from Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to conduct business in the state of Nevada. This means the super-middleweight champion can put on events under his name.
However, this will be a tough challenge as being a promoter is a full-time job and being a boxer at the level of Alvarez is also a full-time job. The champion will have to balance his long training hours with long meetings.
His recovery will have to fit in with all the work involved. Moreover, his mental strength will be tested as he will now have to make a series of decisions about himself and the fighters they sign.

Is Canelo Alvarez parroting Floyd Mayweather?
The path that Alvarez is taking is like the legendary boxer and former multi-weight champion Floyd Mayweather. The undefeated champion split from his promoter Bob Arum and started his own promotional company called Mayweather promotions. Initially, he promoted only his fights. However, he now has a big roster under him.
Alvarez’s former promoter Oscar De La Hoya was another high-profile boxer to set up his promotional company while still boxing. He was a global star and saw the opportunity. Despite starting small, he now has one of the biggest promotional companies in the world.
In both instances, the fighters didn’t allow their ventures to affect their boxing by starting by promoting themselves. Therefore, If Alvarez wants to continue to succeed in his boxing, he has his work cut out for him.
What do you make of Canelo Alvarez starting his promotions? Do you think it will affect his boxing career?
