Let It Ride players are allowed to take back bets if they don’t think they will get tens or better. Otherwise the players “Let It Ride”. When you approach the table, you’ll see 3 betting circles positioned in front of you. The first circle is reserved for your ante bet.

History[edit]

The game was invented by Shuffle Master founder John Breeding, with the goal of fueling demand for the company's shuffling machine.[1]

Initially popular in many casinos, the popularity of the game has waned since the because of its relatively high house edge. Like blackjack and video poker, player decisions in Let It Ride affect the house edge. With the standard pay table and optimal strategy, the house edge is 3.51%,[2] several times that of blackjack and craps.[3]

Basic rules[edit]

Let It Ride is a variation of five-card stud, based on three player cards and two community cards. The two community cards are initially dealt face down. The most distinguishing feature of Let It Ride is that the player is given two opportunities to withdraw exactly one-third of their initial wager. One chance occurs after the player looks at their hand but before the first community card is revealed, and the second occurs after the first community card is revealed, but before the second is revealed. The player may reduce their wager on either of these occasions, or on both, or neither. If the player decides not to withdraw part of their wager, they are said to 'let it ride.'[4] In order to ensure that the player's initial wager is divisible by three, each player must distribute their wager over three betting spots which must all contain the same chip value. On some table layouts these spots are given the symbols 1, 2 and $, with 1 and 2 indicating the thirds of the wager which the player can withdraw before the first and second community cards respectively are turned up, and $ representing the third of the wager which there is never a chance to withdraw.[5]

After players have placed their bets, the dealer starts from their left, and deals each player one card, followed by the first face-down community card, followed by a further card to each player, followed by the second community card, followed by a final card to each player. Players are not permitted to show their cards or to see the cards of other players at any point before the end of the deal.

In the event of a winning hand after the second community card is revealed, what remains of the player's wager is paid out according to a payout table such as the one given below. There are small variations in payoffs between casinos, but the lowest paying hand in Let It Ride is typically a pair of 10s; a pair of nines or less is a losing hand, which results in the player forfeiting their remaining wager to the house.

The Three Card Bonus is an optional side bet offered at some tables. The bet is placed on the player's three cards only. Winnings from a fixed payout table are awarded based on the three-card hand, following the hand rankings of three-card brag. This is comparable to the 'Pair Plus' side bet in the casino game of Three Card Poker.

So you’ve made your way into a casino. You see the slots, the big jackpot games, the seductive Roulette wheel. But, wait. You know exactly where you’re going: to the Let It Ride table. Because once you know the right let it ride strategy for playing this lucrative game, you won’t want to play anything else.

Let It Ride Rules

In Let It Ride, your goal is to make the best five card hand possible. You start by placing your bet. You are then dealt three cards face-up. The Dealer holds on to the other two cards, which are left face-down. After seeing your three card hand, you can decide to wait to see the Dealer’s cards, or you can “let it ride” and match your original bet. After the first card is revealed, you can choose to see the next card, or you can let it ride for a second time, and place a third bet. If your final hand is a pair of 10s or better, you win. If not, the House wins.

Here at Planet 7, we’ve added some extra excitement to our “Let Em Ride” game: each hand, you’re given the chance to include a small additional bet that qualifies you to win some or all of a progressive jackpot.

Let It Ride Steps:

  • You bet.
  • You are dealt three cards face-up.
  • You bet (“let it ride”), or you pass.
  • The Dealer reveals the first of the two face-down cards.
  • You bet (“let it ride”), or you pass.
  • The Dealer reveals the second of the two face-down cards.

Example:

Jim sits down at the Let It Ride table. He places a $10 bet. The Dealer deals Jim three cards: queen of hearts, queen of spades, and four of diamonds.

Jim’s a smart guy. He knows he already has a pair of queens, which means he’s going to win. So Jim lets it ride and puts down a second $10 bet. The Dealer turns over the first face-down card: a six of Spades. That doesn’t help Jim’s hand, but it doesn’t matter. He still has a pair of queens. So Jim lets it ride, and places his third and final $10 bet. The Dealer turns over the last face-down card: three of Clubs. No help, but no matter: Jim’s pair of queens pays out at 1:1 odds, and Jim is paid out $60. That’s a $30 win; go Jim!

But that’s just scratching the surface, because some hands pay out much, much more than 1:1 odds.

Of course the best way to understand Let It Ride (before we get into the serious strategies) is to try playing it. Try Let’em Ride for free now!

Let It Ride History

Let It Ride is a recent invention in the world of poker. Most casinos first introduced the game in 1993. The interesting thing about Let It Ride is that it wasn’t originally created to be a casino game, so much as to sell something: Let It Ride was invented by the Shuffle Master Company as a method of getting their automatic shuffling machines out on the floor.

Having this new exciting game that required shuffling was a great new way to launch a product, and one of the freshest, most intriguing new casino games was born. In 2003, things picked up even more when Let It Ride was adopted by online casinos, allowing players to enjoy the game in their own home, without needing to leave the couch.

Winning Let It Ride Hands, and Their Payout Odds

Let It Ride operates along the classic poker hand hierarchy:

Basic Let It Ride Strategy

The simplest Let It Ride strategy is to know when you’ve won. If you have a pair of tens or better, there is no reason to not bet as much as you possibly can. If you have a winning hand from the start, your goal is just to maximize your payout; if something extra comes out of it as well (maybe a third ten to make three of a kind?) then all the better.

The real Let It Ride strategy starts when you have an opening hand without an immediate win. What cards should you stay with through the reveal of the Dealer’s first card? The reveal of the Dealer’s second card? There are a few different things to consider here, discussed below.

Advanced Let It Ride Strategy

When you’ve seen three cards:

Advanced Let It Ride strategy for the standard paytable on Let It Ride is pretty simple, if you can remember a few simple rules. Again, the goal is to get any sort of payout from your hand, which influences your actions differently in every situation. With three cards, you should only let it ride if you have:

  • Any hand that pays (tens or better, three of a kind)
  • Any three to a Royal Flush
  • Three suited cards in a row except 2-3-4 and ace-2-3
  • Three to a Straight Flush, spread 4, with at least one high card (ten or greater)
  • Three to a Straight Flush, spread 5, with at least two high cards

“Spread 4” means that the cards span 4 numbers in a row, like 5-6-8. Spread 5 means that the cards span 5 numbers, like 5-7-9.

When you’ve seen Four Cards:

Again, check to see if you’ve made a winning hand: any winning hand will do. You don’t want to miss out on winning your fair share because you forgot to keep betting once you’d already won. With four cards, you should only let it ride if you have:

  • Any paying hand (tens or better, two pair, three of a kind)
  • Any four cards of the same suit
  • Any four to an outside straight with at least one high card
  • Any four to an outside straight with no high cards
  • Any four to an outside straight with four high cards

An inside straight is one where an “inside” card is missing, such as 4-5-7-8, while an outside straight is one in which an “outside” card is missing, like 4-5-6-7. Outside straights are better for the player because there are eight cards that can complete the hand, versus four cards for an inside straight.

Let It Ride with a Jackpot

With Planet 7’s twist on the game, Let Em Ride, a progressive jackpot is added to the game for an extra bit of excitement and the chance at a huge payout. The best, however, is that this is no ordinary jackpot; it also pays out in chunks if your hand is a Flush or better. You can win the whole jackpot with a Royal Flush, or make a quick $75 from it with a regular Flush.

To participate in the jackpot, place the additional $1 bet at the start of each of your games.
